Cold Water Ratings and Finishes

Duratek BK (Duratek black) refers to the Duranodic hard anodising process applied to aluminium alloy bodies. It is harder than standard anodising, more resistant to abrasion from rock faces, harness webbing, and cylinder contact, and provides a matte black finish preferred in technical diving contexts. Satin chrome (Satin Ch.) refers to a chrome-plated brass body with a satin rather than polished surface, providing corrosion resistance with a lower-glare finish. Both are appropriate for saltwater diving; Duratek is generally considered more durable in high-contact environments.

  • ICE vs. standard: If you dive in water below 10°C with regularity, choose an ICE-rated model. The sealed chamber prevents water from contacting the internal mechanism and freezing. In warmer water, standard Plutone or Minerva is sufficient and slightly simpler to service.
  • Piston vs. diaphragm mechanism: The Minerva is piston-balanced; Mercurio, Giove, and Plutone are diaphragm-balanced. Diaphragm designs isolate internal components from the water environment entirely, which is the reason they carry cold-water ratings. Piston designs are simpler to service in the field.

Rinse balanced first stages in fresh water after every dive with the DIN inlet cap installed. For ICE-rated models, the environmental chamber seal should be inspected at each service and replaced if any deformation or cracking is visible — a compromised chamber seal defeats the cold-water protection. Annual service with model-specific kits (available in Replacement Parts) replaces HP seat, IP seat, o-rings, and diaphragm as specified.
