Fin and Mask Accessories

Stainless Steel Spring Straps

The S.S. spring strap (38 €, SKU 41606/S,M,L,X,Z) is a coiled stainless steel spring that replaces or supplements the standard rubber or elastic strap on open-heel fins. The spring strap is the standard upgrade for technical diving fins for several reasons: it eliminates manual adjustment — the spring tension holds the fin firmly against any boot thickness; it is significantly more durable than rubber straps, which degrade with UV exposure and lose elasticity; and it makes donning and doffing fins faster, which matters when entering and exiting the water in drysuits or heavy gear.

Five sizes are available (S, M, L, XL, Z) — the size refers to the width of the buckle tab slot on the fin foot pocket, not the diver’s foot size. Measure the tab slot on your specific fin before ordering. All Rubber Fins III and IV models in the Sopras Tek range ship with spring straps already installed; this product is for replacement or for fitting spring straps to fins purchased without them.

Stainless Steel Fin Buckles

The S.S. buckle for fins (40 €, SKU 41602/S,M,L,X) replaces the plastic or non-SS buckle tabs on fin foot pockets. The buckle is the anchor point for the spring strap or rubber strap — if the original plastic buckle cracks or corrodes, the entire strap system becomes unreliable. SS buckle replacement restores the attachment security and extends the usable life of the fin. Four sizes (S, M, L, XL) match different foot pocket tab widths across fin models.

Neoprene Mask Strap with Bungee

The Neoprene mask strap with bungee (10 €, SKU 163020) is a wide neoprene strap that replaces the standard thin silicone split strap on framed and frameless masks. Two advantages: the wider neoprene surface distributes strap pressure more evenly across the back of the head, reducing the pressure point that standard narrow straps create on long dives; and the integrated bungee provides a degree of elastic retention that allows faster one-handed donning. The neoprene material does not catch hair as aggressively as silicone, which many divers find more comfortable under a hood or neoprene cap.

What to Look For

  • Spring strap size matching: Measure the tab slot width on your fin foot pocket before ordering a spring strap. The S/M/L/XL/Z sizing refers to this slot width — using a spring strap that is too wide will not fit; one that is too narrow will not provide secure retention. The fins in the Sopras Tek range (III, IV) use a specific tab width — if unsure, contact Sopras Tek service with your fin SKU to confirm the correct spring strap size.
  • Spring strap vs. rubber strap: Spring straps are more durable and more convenient but are not adjustable to different boot thicknesses in the way a buckle-adjust rubber strap is. For divers who use their fins with different boots in different seasons, spring strap sizing should accommodate the thickest boot they dive with — the spring will accommodate thinner boots within a range.
  • Neoprene strap compatibility: The neoprene mask strap with bungee uses standard universal mask buckle tabs and fits most framed and frameless masks. Confirm tab slot compatibility with your specific mask before ordering.

FAQ

Are spring straps worth the upgrade cost?

For technical diving, yes. Spring straps eliminate strap adjustment, provide a consistent fit regardless of water temperature or boot thickness variation, and are more durable than rubber. The time savings on donning are modest in warm water but significant when suiting up in a drysuit on a cold boat with gloves on. Spring straps also eliminate the common failure mode of rubber straps snapping during a dive — a failure that is merely inconvenient in open water but potentially serious in an overhead environment.

How do I fit a spring strap to my fins?

The spring strap ends have looped hooks that attach to the buckle tabs on each side of the fin foot pocket. Remove the existing strap by unhooking it from the tabs. Loop each end of the spring strap onto the corresponding tab — the strap curves around the heel of the boot when the fin is worn. No tools are required. Confirm that both hooks are fully seated on their tabs and that the spring provides firm retention before diving.
